Socket Science 2021
Socket Science is an ultimate platform for Joint Replacement surgeons from across the country to converge and address the complexities of acetabular reconstruction, cup inclination and positioning, and selection of the right implant. It includes discourses by the masters themselves and a Live Surgery Workshop where Joint replacement luminaries share their sought-after expertise with the orthopaedic fraternity.
Why socket science:
The relationship between DePuy and MIOT goes back over three decades. MIOT, founded by Prof. P.V.A. Mohandas has always been open to sharing technology and to learning. Therefore, while conducting courses with DePuy, we at MIOT found that most of the queries from the doctors visiting us, was regarding the acetabular component in hip replacement surgery.
The acetabular component has always been an enigma, so much so, that a lot of us – orthopaedic surgeons in difficult scenarios would lean towards hemi-arthroplasty rather than going into the acetabulum. As technology and techniques have improved and progressed, we at MIOT agree with the international community that there is a socket for every scenario and it is this that really started us thinking about a course focussed on the acetabular component. While discussing this course with DePuy, it was the J&J DePuy side that actually had a Eureka moment when it came to naming the course and we decided to call it ‘Socket Science’.
To reconstruct and preserve or to replace:
This has been a burning question in the field of Joint Surgery in orthopaedics. On 10th March 2021, as MIOT celebrated its 10 years of Socket Science, 40 renowned Indian Orthopaedic surgeons convened at MIOT and discussed, debated, viewed live surgery to establish protocols for the preservation and, if required, replacement of joints.
