FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN ASIA

MIOT Hospitals, Chennai, opens the Museum of Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement). This will eradicate myths, educate the public and empower patients to choose an artificial joint that will last a life time. At today’s function MIOT is celebrating the performance of 30,000 joint replacements – 20,000 hip replacements and 10,000 knee replacements.

One of the first Total Hip Replacements was performed by Prof. Dr.P.V.A.Mohandas in the year 1975 who founded the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Trauma in the year 1992 for
Trauma, Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery. The present facility in Manapakkam known as the MIOT Hospitals started functioning in the year 1999 exactly 15 years ago and now MIOT has 43 specialities and has grown to be a 1000 bedded hospital.

Few months ago, DePuy – Johnson & Johnson informed us that we have so far sourced from them 10,000 Total Knee Replacement joints. When we researched our own data we found we had indeed completed 30,000 joint replacements – more than 20,000 Total Hip Replacements and 10,000 Total Knee Replacements which is indeed one of the world’s largest figures.

We have grown over the years and have become quite famous in joint replacement surgery in the world. Patients come from various parts of the world for Joint Replacement Surgery to MIOT Hospitals, Chennai.

With the help of DePuy – Johnson & Johnson from whom we sourced most of our joints we have kept pace with the radical changes that have taken place in joint replacement surgery. The materials used to produce the components have enormously changed; the design of the implants has changed; the instruments and jigs necessary to fit these artificial components accurately are changing rapidly.

All these years of improvements have contributed to increase the life of these artificial joints. We are able to get our patients back to completely normal and unrestricted activity. Further, we are able to choose for each patient a compatible joint that will last a lifetime.
