MIOT International, India and the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mauritius, together performed life-saving kidney transplant procedures
A team of renowned specialists from MIOT International, Chennai, India comprising Prof. Dr. R. Manikandan, Director of the Department of Urology,Dr.Sanjeev Nair, Senior Nephrologist and Dr.SenthilKumaran, Head of the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery performed kidney transplants in collaboration with healthcare professionals at Victoria Hospital on patients suffering from chronic kidney disease or end-stage renal disease in Mauritius. They worked alongside a dedicated local multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, nephrologists, transplant coordinators, and laboratory technicians.
This collaborative effort not only enhanced the immediate healthcare outcomes for the patients involved but also contributed to knowledge sharing and capacity building within the local medical community, laying the groundwork for further advancements in organ transplantation in Mauritius.
In this context, the Minister of Health and Wellness of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr. Anil Kumar Bachoo, paid a visit to Victoria Hospital yesterday, where renal transplant procedures were being carried out. During his visit, Minister Bachoo emphasized the significance of this initiative, noting that such surgeries had not been conducted over the past nine months due to a shortage of specialized equipment and essential medical supplies.

Highlighting the critical role of kidney transplantation in improving patient outcomes and saving lives, he described the procedure as truly transformative for individuals suffering from chronic kidney disease. The Minister also reiterated his commitment to strengthening the national healthcare system and expressed his vision of making Mauritius fully self-reliant in performing renal transplant surgeries in the near future.
“Kidney transplantation is a life-changing procedure,” said Minister Bachoo. “My priority is to build local expertise so that Mauritius can independently perform kidney transplants in the near future. To achieve this, we will continue inviting internationally renowned specialists to train our medical teams while also making major investments in infrastructure and capacity building. Our goal is clear—ensuring more Mauritians receive life-saving transplants right here at home.”
He further informed that similar interventions are planned for the near future as part of a broader strategy to advance the nation’s self-reliance in transplant medicine.
Commenting on the surgical approach, Prof. Dr. R. Manikandan explained that laparoscopic kidney transplant techniques were employed. These minimally invasive procedures involve small incisions, specialized instruments, and a camera (laparoscope), allowing surgeons to remove the donor kidney and prepare the recipient for transplantation with greater precision and reduced trauma.
“This method offers numerous advantages, including reduced post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times—ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes,” Dr. Manikandan added.
This milestone event underscores the Government of Mauritius’s commitment to enhancing tertiary healthcare services and reaffirms its dedication to delivering high-quality, accessible treatment to all citizens.
