Brain surgery without fear

21st Aug 2015

Even though the patient knew that their brain tumour was on the verge of becoming inoperable and surgery was their last hope, they find ways to delay the surgery.

Reason being, like any other invasive procedure, brain surgery is closely associated with many side effects (also based on the side and area of brain surgery). After brain surgery a patient may experienceweakness, poor balance and coordination, confusion, personality changes, speech problems, seizures and at times may be confined to a wheelchair.

For many it’s the disfigurement that matters the most. Conventionally, brain surgery requires a patient to completely shave their head; also post surgery it will leave a visible scar. Especially in women, it scars their mind more than the skin.

But in case of Mrs. Parveen Sultana Diti the scenario is totally different.

49 year old Mrs. Parveen Sultana Diticame to MIOT having been diagnosed to have a brain tumor. She had been having dull aching pain in her head for a few weeks. She was seen by ENT surgeons in Dhaka and was being treated for sinusitis. She started to experience nausea at which point she was subjected to an MRI scan of the head. She was found to have a tumor in the left side of the brain.

Mrs. Parveen Sultana Ditichose to come to MIOT for further treatment. She complained of constant headaches and nausea along with loss of memory for recent events when we saw her first. We investigated her further with detailed scans. She had a very deep seated tumor on the left side.

Mrs. Parveen Sultana Ditiwas otherwise very well preserved. She had no neurological deficits. She is one of the most well known movie actresses in Bangladesh, and the winner of the National Film Award. She was here with her 2 children – Lamia and Dipto. Their mother had lovely hair and it was their desire that we do not disfigure her by shaving her head.

We were able to procure the latest navigation equipment to help us get to the tumor in the brain through the smallest opening possible, without cutting much hair. The equipment, the latest of its kind, from The Stryker Corporation, was shipped in pronto. Navigation protocol scans were done to plan our point of entry and the trajectory. This piece of equipment assures sub millimeter accuracy.

Cutting only a 1 cm strip of hair along the incision line, we removed almost the whole tumor, which was the size of a lemon, through an opening about 4×4 cms in the bone. We navigated ourselves through a 1 cm cube tunnel of brain, far away from important areas of the brain – the areas that serve hand function and speech being right over the tumor – and thanks to the aid of navigation, we were able to get to the tumor, which otherwise could be tantamount to searching for a needle in a haystack, considering the deep location of the tumor, and the fact that there are no landmarks once inside the brain.

Mrs. Parveen Sultana Ditiwas extubated right after the surgery, which took about 6 hours. She was fully conscious and had no neurological deficits after the operation. She was moved to the ward the very next day and started moving around the room and taking a normal diet. She recovered extremely well from the surgery. Since her hair was not cut(also no visible scar) she did not appear to have undergone a major brain surgery but a simple cosmetic procedure. 10 days down the surgery she visited Pondy for a short trip.

The MIOT Neurosurgical team, the Intensive care team and the nurses once again proved the excellence in medical care that MIOT International has always been known for.
