What is Neurorestorative Surgery?

In simple words, it means a surgical procedure to restore a paralyzed arm, hand, leg following a stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury, and brachial plexus injury. Therefore it can be termed as a paralysis reversal procedure.

Initially the patient is evaluated by the team of Neurorehabilitation experts, Neurosurgeon, Orthopedics, Physio-Occupational therapists, Psychologists and comprehensive rehabilitation goal is determined. Various methods such as Spinal cord stimulation, Neuro restorative Nerve Transfers, Tendon transfers, Arthrodesis, Baclofen Pump, Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy methods are utilized to gain function.

What is the success rate?

Success rate depends on the nature of the injury, time since injury, age of the patient. Best case scenario is when patients with lower limb weakness have started walking with support and those with hand weakness have regained grasp function.
