Surgical training in Chennai, South India
Cooperation with South Indian Hospital and BG Hospital in Germany
Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik in Tuebingen and Madras Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (MIOT) in Chennai are associated hospitals since 30 Years. In future both Hospitals want to exchange Doctors, Nurses and Physiotherapists.
We tied up the first contact between the former chief of BG Hospital Prof. Siegfried Weller in Tuebingen and Prof. Pakkiam Mohandas, in Chennai, South India, city of million of people. In 1975 Prof. Mohandas visited Tuebingen BG Hospital. In between MIOT hospitals expanded and became a multidisciplinary modern hospital.
This hospital is one of the two hospitals in Chennai, which is equivalent to the European standard, said Prof. Mohandas in Tuebingen. He is the director and chief surgeon in the Hospital (MIOT). His son Dr. Prithvi Mohandas is specialized in Hip-Surgery.
Present BG chief Prof. Weise said that MIOT is a distinguished international hospital. The patients come from all over India and overseas. At the same time the hospital is committed to a considerable number of non insured and poor patients- to treat them free or at reduced cost.
Now the hospital has 500 beds, and the planned annexes make it possible to admit 500 more patients. The number of outpatients a day increased rapidly from 31 in 1999 to 450 currently. MIOT has a 6 day working week. Compared to 5 operations per day in 1999, today daily surgeries are 43.
Furthermore, Prof. Weise added, MIOT Doctors possess good experience in reconstructive surgery, especially in the Endoprothetic and revision surgery. This hospital is affiliated to a nursing collage and nursing school. MIOT also has a research institute (MIR), including stem cell research, especially from fat tissue.
In the future MIOT and BG not only want to exchange doctors, but also nurses, technicians, physioand ergo therapeutics. In one month MIOT has more severe polytrauma patients than in one year in BG-hospital Tuebingen, says Prof. Dankward Hoentsch, who has visited MIOT hospitals, in South India.
“It drives young doctors to get experience and expertise”.
