About MIOT

“Medicine is not a trade; it is a calling where the physician thinks not only with his head, but also with his heart.” – Padmashri Prof. Dr. P. V. A. Mohandas

Early days

Padmashri Prof. Dr. P. V. A. Mohandas started the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (M.I.O.T) on 12 February, 1999, as a 70-bed hospital, with full-time doctors, focussed primarily on Orthopaedics and Trauma Care. It was soon apparent that some of the trauma patients, often brought there in a critical condition, came with pre-existing conditions involving the heart, kidneys, etc. In order to stabilise and deliver complete end-to-end care to these patients, these pre existing conditions had to be managed along with providing trauma care. In other cases, patients were brought in with injuries to their organs. Treating such conditions called for the expertise of specialists. Given the nature of trauma care, it was important to have full-time specialists so that the right care could be delivered on time.

Thus MIOT Hospitals / International came to be.

With the addition of more specialities to address key health areas, and investment in the latest medical technology and the best talent, we are, today, able to deliver collaborative, multi-speciality care.

Our focus

As a hospital founded by doctors, at MIOT, our priority was and continues to be our patients. ‘Putting patients first’ is not just our motto; it is our way of life. Be it bringing in the latest medical innovation and the brightest minds, the best equipment and facilities, or the adoption of stringent standards and protocols, no expense or effort is spared when it concerns the welfare of our patients. Above all, our care is delivered by our family of doctors, nurses, technicians, nutritionists, counsellors and support staff with compassion and the utmost consideration for our patients’ dignity. Simply put, everything we do is done so as to ensure that our patients recover speedily and comfortably and return to perfect health and normal life.

MIOT InternationalToday, MIOT International is a 1000-bed hospital offering quaternary care across 63 specialities. Among the facilities on campus is one of the best imaging sciences departments in the country and a state-of-the-art laboratory (ranked 8th internationally). The 21 state-of-the-art operation theatres are equipped with the sophisticated technology and instrumentation required to enable surgeons perform the most complex procedures. Patient rooms in the hospital have generous views of greenery, while atriums fill the building with natural light and fresh air. There are separate entrances for emergency, OP (out-patients), and in-patients and their attendants. Strict infection control measures and sophisticated air systems ensure a near zero-bacteria environment.

It is no wonder, then, that our patients come to us from all parts of India and over 130 countries. MIOT International is recognised, both nationally and internationally, as one of India’s premier healthcare institutions.

Embracing innovation

MIOT International has been on the forefront of several medical innovations and breakthroughs, most notably in orthopaedics. Indeed, it was Padmashri Prof. Dr. P. V. A. Mohandas who performed the first hip-replacement surgery in India.

As MIOT grew into a full-fledged, multi-speciality institution, our skilled surgeons pioneered keyhole surgery and pinhole surgery in the country.

Kidney transplants in India took on a new dimension when India’s first kidney transplant across blood groups was performed at MIOT.

Most recently, our super-specialists performed the first haplo-identical bone marrow transplant – a revolutionary bone marrow procedure – in India. MIOT International has, thereby, opened the doors to thousands of patients with blood cancer who have been waiting endlessly for a perfect match.

MIOT International is also a leading centre for orthopaedic research and stem cell research.
