Off-pump Beating-heart Surgery

At the MIOT Centre for Thoracic and Cardiac Care, most bypass surgeries are performed using the off-pump coronary artery bypass or ‘beating-heart’ surgery technique. The Centre has performed over 10,000 beating heart surgeries and has a success rate of 99.5%, which surpasses benchmarks set by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (USA).

Bypassing the heart-lung machine

Off-pump coronary artery bypass or ‘beating-heart’ surgery or Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery is a form of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, performed without cardiopulmonary bypass (heart-lung machine), for coronary heart disease. A revolutionary CABG technique, this complex procedure requires competent teams and offers the patient several advantages:

  • No requirement of blood transfusion
  • Up to 30% savings in costs over conventional bypass surgery
  • Minimal stay in ICU and hospital
  • Minimised chances of infection
  • Faster rate of recovery

Arterial grafting for bypass surgery

During a CABG at MIOT, surgeons use the patient’s own artery (IMA) for bypass. While it is a technical challenge, it gives the patient an excellent long-term result without subsequent blockage in the bypassed vessels.
Endoscopic vein-harvesting from the legs for CABG
When veins from the leg are used for bypass in some patients, surgeons use a keyhole incision to remove the vein from the leg. This hastens recovery.

A global referral centre

MTCC is a global referral centre for this complicated surgery. Our referral patients mostly include those who require second or third time surgeries, elderly patients and patients with additional complications like lung diseases, kidney failure, poor pumping capacity of the heart or those who are generally considered inoperable.
